It was bad enough to discover the shocking reason Sharon wasn’t afraid of Matt, and now Young & Restless is asking viewers to deal with a plot twist between them that’s just… gross.
Many Young & Restless fans have questioned Matt’s continued presence at Crimson Lights given that Sharon owns the place, but aside from his encounter with her and Mariah, he’d had the decency to show up when she wasn’t around. So imagine our surprise (not) when the writers scripted a scene in which he crept up behind her on the patio and nearly made her drop her dishes!
Rather than allowing her to be as terrified as she rightfully should have been given they were alone, Sharon treated the intrusion by the man who had violently raped her in the past, more than once, as nothing more than an annoyance. She didn’t even get the satisfaction of ordering him off the premises and barring him from returning. Nope. On Young & Restless in the year 2026, Sharon was made to entertain her rapist’s poor widdle hurt feelings.
Adding insult to injury, they actually wrote dialogue for Sharon in which she compared Clark’s situation to her bi-polar disorder. They really thought they were doing the gymnastics needed to coerce viewers into seeing Sharon and her rapist as having common ground. But anyone even slightly familiar with their history wouldn’t buy into it.
In case you’re not familiar, the clip below makes it very clear how absolutely absurd and offensive it is that Sharon should ever be expected to accept the presence of this man in Genoa City, let alone on the property where she lives or at the business she owns. It’s so disturbing that it deserves a trigger warning.
Not only is the latest twist between Sharon and Clark unbelievable and offensive, but his insistence on getting in her face, forcing her to listen to his sob story, and refusing to leave is tantamount to him forcing himself on her all over again… just in a different way.
We get it, they want to keep Roger Howarth. Who wouldn’t? But this isn’t the way. Young & Restless doesn’t seem to realize that soap audiences have evolved. Sharon’s rapist being allowed to push himself on her all over again is, in a word, gross.
