It’s been the slowest of slow burns, but Young & Restless appears to finally be launching the most controversial pairing in recent memory this week. And perhaps it’s because we’ve been starved of soapy and salacious scandals, but we’re completely here for it!
The messy match-up in question is all but certain to be a total trainwreck, which is the key to its appeal. Young & Restless has been playing it safe for far too long; it’s well past time for a soap scandal so controversial that it will send the fanbase into chaos. A dalliance both forbidden and smoking hot.
The momentum has been growing for weeks, if not months, as the pair in question started sharing more scenes together, and as is often the case because there’s a fine line between love and hate, butting heads over their families’ continuing rivalry. When we moved on to them sharing secrets, we knew it wasn’t just happening in our imaginations… a deliciously soapy romantic pairing was truly taking shape.
This week, as the Young & Restless preview teased, Victoria and Kyle will have a close encounter of the near-kiss variety, which seems to confirm that they’re “going there”.
Surprise and outrage are bound to ricochet through Genoa City as they did back in the day when Nikki and Victoria shared Cole, or later Deacon Sharpe. It may even create shock on par with Sharon marrying Victor, though we’re not sure anything could top that, to be honest.
Needless to say, we’re completely in. That said, there will be plenty of reasons for fans to push back on the romance. It’s admittedly questionable to date your daughter’s ex, or your ex’s mother. There’s also an age gap, though they’re both consenting adults. Fans may even object on the grounds that their families hate each other, although all of these things are exactly what increase the entertainment value.
The fallout should be incredible to witness. Claire may turn dark again and disrupt her relationship with Holden, and it will add fuel to the fire of Billy’s latest downward spiral, given it’s his ex-wife and nephew. Nate may take a step back from his friendship with Vikki, and Newman and Abbott family members and outliers will be shocked and outraged… or even amused. Imagine Adam’s delight in Victoria taking the heat from Daddy for once!
