Longtime fans of All My Children will never forget the scene from 1985 when Erica Kane came face to face with a grizzly bear. “You may not do this!” Erica screamed. “Do you understand me?! You may not come near me! I am Erica Kane and you are a filthy beast!” And just like that, the bear turned around and walked away. In that Pine Valley scenario, the bear in question had been trained but for one The Young and the Restless actress, an encounter in the woods could have gone a whole other way…
Zuleyka Silver (Audra) was hiking alone during a trip and not only encountered a bear but a mama bear with a cub. “Sorry, Mom. I made a big furry friend,” the actress shared while posting a video of the real-life soapy scene. “My understanding was that running could trigger a chase response, so I stood my ground, stayed calm, made noise, and tried to make myself appear larger while avoiding sudden movements. (Black bears and brown bears are very different stories, of course.)”
She was very aware that, “in that moment, I had two choices: head deeper into the forest or cross the bear’s path to return to the main trail,” and continued to explain, “I was scared, shocked, and completely in awe. Seeing a mother bear and her cub awakened every instinct I had. Even so, I tried to stay calm and let reason and intuition guide me. For one brief moment, the bear and I made eye contact. It felt as though we both made the same decision: neither of us was a threat to the other.”
Of course, when out in nature, you must respect everything that comes along with its territory and Silver added, “I have immense respect for these animals and for the beautiful wilderness they call home. Thank you to God, nature, and those ancient trees for watching over me.”

We’re simply happy that Silver enjoyed her hike and came out the other end safe and sound! The bear “meet and greet” may have been enough to stop the actress in her tracks and the same could be said for a few other things that happened last week on your favorite soaps…
