As far as we’re concerned, new Young & Restless headwriters Jamey Giddens and Dan O’Connor’s material can’t begin airing soon enough. But until it does, we’re going to keep adding to the tag team’s compact but essential to-do list. On the agenda today: the characters in the most urgent need of a remix.
1.Billy
Jason Thompson is a fantastic actor (and has the Daytime Emmy to prove it). But we are beyond tired of Billy’s poor little rich boy act. If after all these years, the character still doesn’t believe that Mommy loves him enough, send the nepo baby to therapy, don’t make us seek counseling to deal with the impact his “Me, me, me!” whining has on us. Dude’s already rich, handsome and (he would say) smart. Would it be too much to ask that he have a sense of humor instead of the chip on his shoulder?
2. Devon
Who the heck is the Debbie Downer that’s appearing on screen these days? Two-time Emmy winner Bryton James could create chemistry with a potted plant, so why is Devon being wasted (a) on the backburner and (b) as Genoa City’s resident sourpuss? We cheered when the actor first crossed over to Beyond the Gates, because he completely lit up — the writing there allowed him to shine. Surely, Young & Restless could raise its game to make better use of the leading man who’s being treated like a day player.
3. Audra
She’s as calculating as she is beautiful, yet Audra always seems to end up begging for scraps. Why? If it’s because she’s not old money like the Abbotts, Newmans and Winterses, play that — give us a reason to root for her beyond the fact that Zuleyka Silver is innately appealing. Audra could — and arguably should — become a next-generation Jill Foster or Nikki Reed, a young woman who comes from nothing and is determined to have everything. Oh, and for heaven’s sake, give her a genuine love interest already!
4. Claire
We’ve discussed before how overnight Hayley Erin’s alter ego went from cold-blooded villainess to Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm. Claire has evened out a bit since then, but the show still isn’t making full use of the Emmy winner (for her work on General Hospital). Three years in Genoa City, and we still feel like we barely know Claire. What does she want? What drives her now? If she has no real direction, then it stands to reason that she’s on a journey to nowhere.
5.Victor
Yes, the great and powerful Victor Newman needs a refresh. He is trapped in an endless cycle that finds him doing something horrible, getting fussed at for it, not really paying for it and then doing something horrible again. Every once in a while, he sheds a tear to remind us that he loves Nikki, his family, his company. But what are we supposed to cling to in Victor? Why are we expected to care? It’s 2026; ain’t nobody rooting for the billionaires who run roughshod over us all. Perhaps if he had a personality along with a (bad) attitude, we’d find it easier to concern ourselves with whether, as always, he comes out on top.
