Nick Encounters a Mysterious New Woman After a Drug-Fueled Nightmare

Nick checks into the motel near the park. He ignores messages from his sister and Sharon and rolls over to sleep. Matt appears to him, telling him to get out of bed. It’s time to rock and roll. Nick isn’t in the mood. His old enemy reminds him that he saved his life.

Nick points out how much he attempted to take from him. Matt Clark pushes Nick to confront the hard questions. He’s certain he loves being high because it gives him the freedom to be the man he’s always resisted becoming. Nick protests, but Matt reminds him that it wasn’t long ago that he tried to kill him. Nick blames him for his addiction, but Matt urges him to accept responsibility for what he really wants. Grabbing his keys, he announces it’s time to leap into the abyss.

Matt Takes Nick for a Ride

As Matt drives them through the darkness, he reminds Nick of all the things he could have been and how he was always forced to color between the lines for the sake of his family. He’s convinced that Nick always resented and envied him, with his life driven entirely by impulse and indifferent to society. Nick accuses him of wasting half of his life obsessing over him and Sharon. This only makes Matt laugh.

Nick is Haunted by Cassie

Matt suddenly pulls over and leads Nick into The Shadow Room. They find Sharon at a table, doubled over and stoned. She’s waiting for a surprise from Nick. He’s dismayed and tries to help her up. She can barely stand. Mariah appears and yells at Nick to back off. She blames him for her mom becoming a junky. Sharon protests, saying he only allowed her to free herself from her day-to-day life so she could become her true self. Nick wants to get her into rehab.

Mariah points out he didn’t even make it a day. Nick complains that it was difficult. When he calls her “Mariah,” she explains that she’s actually Cassie and accuses him of behaving like her death meant nothing. Amid flashbacks, she complains that he was her hero, and he’s only disappointed her and the siblings she never had the chance to meet. When Matt announces there are more sights to see on their tour, Nick grabs Sharon and heads toward the door.

Nick Goes Off the Road

As Sharon and Nick drive through the night, she admits she loves living in a haze. When they talk about Cassie watching them from Heaven, Adam suddenly appears in the backseat and starts strangling his brother. Sharon screams, “Why are you doing this?!” Adam grits, “I’m getting justice,” as the car veers off the road.

Chelsea Declares Nick a Monster

Nick lands on the sofa at the ranch, having just been sucker punched by Adam. He and Chelsea are furious and begin to rail at him. Adam accuses him of being the garbage of the family. Chelsea screams that Connor is dead because of him. He found Nick’s stash of fentanyl and overdosed. They intend to take Christian away from him. Nick pleads with them; he loves Christian. Adam and Chelsea holler that they have to save the boy from Nick and she calls him a monster.

Nikki and Victor Pile on

Nick lunges away and stumbles into The Shadow Room. Everyone in the club is strung out and frozen. He finds his dealer at the bar, tempting him with a bag of pills. When Nick attempts to grab him, Nikki slaps his hand away.

Nikki accuses Nicholas of being a liar. He’s broken her heart! He fumbles for excuses, but she’s having none of it. She lectures him about how much effort is needed to deal with addiction. Victor suddenly appears to pile on, declaring that he’s ashamed of Nick; he’s destroyed the family! He and Nikki argue over who is to blame for their son being a loser. She’s had enough of this and orders Matt to bring her a double vodka.

The Final Scenes

With the sound of Victor accusing him of destroying the family ringing in his ears, Nick returns to the motel. Victoria appears to her brother. She reminds him of what a hero he has been to people. She’s certain that took a toll on him. Sobbing, Nick wonders if being a hero is what he’s really running away from. He promises his sister he will do whatever it takes to recover.

Nick wakes from the nightmare to banging on the motel door. He sadly reads a text from Christian, who wishes they could watch Spinal Tap together. The banging continues until he answers. It’s the woman from the room next door. She heard Nick screaming and it sounded as though he was in pain. When he claims he’s okay, she asks if he has any stuff to share.
