There’s an absolutely earth-shattering comeback no headwriter has dared to write so far, but major change is in the air for Young & Restless, so brace yourselves.
Coming back from the dead is a well-worn trope on soap operas and always has been. Genoa City residents hardly blink these days when someone they thought was gone for good strolls into Crimson Lights or the Athletic Club. Diane and Phyllis both faked their deaths and Matt Clark died ages ago, yet they’re all walking among the living once again. Heck, they’re even dating.
So, the resurrection we’re talking about in this story is anything but impossible; it’s simply that no headwriter so far has chosen to make the bold decision to bring this powerhouse back… yet. So, why do we suspect that it’s finally going to happen, and who are we all getting emotional about? Read on.
Nearly two decades after Drucilla Winters went over a cliff during a confrontation with Phyllis while defending her pal, Sharon, we have a sixth sense that we’re going to discover that presumed dead doesn’t necessarily mean really most sincerely dead. But it’s more than a feeling. The stars seem to be aligning for a Victoria Rowell comeback.
After stints with Amy and Stephanie, it’s clearer than ever how much a matriarch is needed for the Winters family. Olivia is mentioned frequently, but has never appeared, and whenever we start thinking about the matter, Dru always comes to the forefront of our minds. Dru is the one they need… and the one we want. The real deal.
At this point, so much has happened since Dru left that it would be spellbinding to watch her react to it all. Her beloved Neil is gone, Lily has grown children, Devon has a son, and Malcolm nearly died. Malcolm and Stephanie had a son, so Lily has a half-brother, Nate has a half-brother who died on Cane’s estate… and wait until she hears about the cheating scandal that caused Devon to punch Nate and end his medical career, which he’s about to get back!
Drucilla’s head would be spinning, and ours will be too if Young & Restless’ new co-headwriters make the move we think/hope they’re going to make. Jamey Giddens and Rowell have worked together as creative partners, notably writing The Rich and the Ruthless together, so if anyone is going to bring Dru back, it stands to reason that it could be him.
Our soapy senses are also tingling at the shuffling of the Winters kids on the canvas. Devon has announced he’s opening an art school with Neil’s name on it, Nate is eyeing a return to his rightful place at the hospital (thank you!), and Lily will be running Winters and owning Chancellor. It’s not as though musical jobs are anything new for the current writing team, but this feels different, as though puzzle pieces are being put into place in anticipation of the final missing one completing the picture.
Will Young & Restless’ new co-headwriters, Giddens and Dan O’Connor, turn the soap world upside-down and inside-out by finally bringing back Drucilla Winters? We’re waiting with bated breath to find out. Would you like to see Dru return?
