As far as I’m concerned, new material from Young & Restless headwriter Josh Griffith’s successors can’t begin airing soon enough. Why? Because even his final story has me asking, “What? Why? No.”
In a nutshell: Billy Boy has discovered that John bailed out Chancellor Industries ages ago, and the debt was never repaid. In the nepo baby’s mind, this means that the Abbotts now own Katherine’s empire. And yes, they might have a claim to the company. But there are still some major problems with this plot.
1. John would never have taken Chancellor from Katherine.
The two of them were best friends back in high school, for Pete’s sake, and they remained close forever after. The Abbott family’s patriarch would have sooner disowned Billy than hurt Kay in any way.
2. If Jill wanted to keep Chancellor from Billy, why did she hire him?
The show may have forgotten that she put her son and Lily in charge of Chancellor Communications a few years ago, but hello! We didn’t.
3. Billy’s the only Abbott who is into this idea.
Jack, Ashley and Traci all agree that going after Chancellor is a nonstarter. So how on earth can Billy think he’d win in court when even his own family is like, “Nah, hard pass”?
4. Billy is reorganizing a company he doesn’t own.
Whether he ever gets his hands on a share of Chancellor, he hasn’t yet. Nonetheless, he’s running around town threatening to fire staff. Say what? Even if he won in court, the case would drag on for years; it’s not as if Lily and Cane are about to simply hand over the conglomerate.
5. Billy thinks he’s the boss.
Spoiler alert: He’s not. He’s behaving as though he personally inherited the company and is therefore in charge. But as Jack has pointed out repeatedly, it would belong to John’s heirs, which means Billy wouldn’t control more than a quarter of the corporation at most.
